Lexicon

What does the term 4PL (Fourth Party Logistics) mean?

4PL stands for Fourth Party Logistics. This refers to service providers responsible for coordinating the logistics processes of other companies. Unlike 3PL (Third Party Logistics), 4PL providers do not own any physical assets. Their offering consists solely of consulting and strategic expertise. The goal of a 4PL provider is to optimize the client’s supply chain effectively. Their role is primarily advisory and managerial, rather than operational. A strong understanding of the industry and experience in specific business areas are key requirements for 4PL companies. Clients who work with 4PL providers benefit from time savings on a coordination level and may also significantly reduce costs by avoiding operational mistakes through expert guidance.
