What is a barcode reader?

A barcode reader scans and processes barcode data. Types include:

• Pen Reader: Uses LED (red or infrared) to illuminate the barcode; the reflected light is interpreted via a phototransistor.
• Laser Scanner: A laser beam is swept across the barcode, and the reflection is interpreted via mirrors and lenses.

Handheld scanners are the most common form, used in warehouses and retail.
