What are customs tariff numbers?

A customs tariff number, also called a commodity code or HS code, is a numerical identifier that classifies a product based on its nature and is recognized globally by the World Trade Organization (WTO).
It is used to determine import and export regulations. The code indicates whether a product is subject to restrictions, prohibitions, or special duties. It also serves to calculate taxes, such as export duties or excise taxes.

Customs tariff numbers vary in length:

  • 8-digit codes are used for export
  • 11-digit codes are used for imports, including additional national provisions like anti-dumping duties, VAT regulations, bans, or import limits
