What is meant by the term delivery?

A delivery refers to the shipment of goods from Person or Company A to Person or Company B.
Usually, a postal or logistics provider is responsible for delivery, making it a three-party process:

  • the supplier (seller)
  • the customer (buyer)
  • the carrier or logistics service provider

Legal aspects:

  • in B2C (business to consumer), the seller bears the risk of transport damage.
  • in B2B or C2C (peer-level relationships), liability transfers to the buyer once the goods are handed over to the carrier.

Cost and delivery terms:

The seller defines the shipping costs. In many cases, they are waived if a minimum order value is reached. In long-term B2B contracts, delivery costs may be eliminated entirely. The seller is also responsible for defining delivery conditions and is liable for violations or delays.

Logistical delivery process:

  1. Order is received

  2. Goods are picked and sent to the outbound area

  3. Awaiting pickup by the transport provider

Two communication types between supplier and transporter:

  • Delivery with advance notice:
The order is confirmed digitally in advance (including quantity and delivery date).
Data is already in the system upon arrival → streamlined inbound process

  • Delivery without advance notice:
Delivery is not pre-registered; data must be entered manually upon arrival.

Recommendation: Use delivery notifications for better integration and supply chain transparency.
