What is meant by a high-bay warehouse?

A high-bay warehouse is a pallet racking system ranging from 12 to 50 meters in height.

Silo construction models integrate the racks with roof and wall structures, sometimes supporting the building itself. Typically, these are operated by automated storage and retrieval systems (AS/RS). Forklifts are only used up to a certain height.

Advantages:

  • Good accessibility
  • High level of automation
  • Low space requirements due to vertical structure

Disadvantages:

  • High investment
  • Complex expansion
  • Vulnerability to equipment failure (e.g., stacker cranes)
