The term logistics 4.0 was first introduced in 2011 by Henning Kagermann, Wolf-Dieter Lukas, and Wolfgang Wahlster in a report by the industry 4.0 working group. Broadly, Logistics 4.0 describes the impact of digitalization and automation on transport and supply systems. More specifically, it refers to the integration and networking of logistics processes. New logistics systems are characterized by scalability, mobility, flexibility, adaptability, and modularity. Intelligent systems are already being used in several logistics sectors, and logistics planning providers are increasingly working with logistics 4.0 technologies.
