What is meant by the term pallet shoe?

A pallet shoe is used when assigning external unit load numbers. It is typically made of plastic and contains a barcode. The shoe is clipped onto the pallet during storage; the barcode is scanned or entered to assign a unit load number. It is reusable and removed during outbound processing.
