What is meant by the term paternoster rack?

A paternoster rack is a vertical carousel system. Goods are stored on swing trays attached between two vertically circulating chains, usually powered by electric motors.

Advantages:

• excellent space utilization
• clean storage solution
• supports the FIFO principle
• good for order picking

Disadvantages:

• high investment cost compared to pallet racks
• limited scalability
• less flexibility than flow racks
• retrieval can be blocked by technical malfunctions
