A perpetual inventory is a simplified procedure permitted under § 241 (2) of the German Commercial Code (HGB) if stock quantities at the balance sheet date can be determined without physical stocktaking, based on warehouse records or inventory cards. A physical inventory must be carried out in the following fiscal year. It is often done during periods of low stock, to minimize effort.
