What does a picker do?

The components of picking systems generally include the picking warehouse, transport equipment, the human worker (picker), and the picking order. In a picking warehouse, goods are typically stored only temporarily, as they are intended for immediate fulfillment as part of a picking order. Therefore, this type of warehouse serves as a buffer zone and also fulfills a presence function, ensuring items are readily available.

The picking warehouse can be divided into different zones, with each zone holding only specific parts of the overall inventory assortment. Common warehouse types used in picking operations include floor storage, shelving storage, and flow rack systems.

Transport equipment is used to support the picker and minimize picking time. It facilitates:

  • the replenishment of goods to the picking system
  • assistance for the picker during task execution
  • the inbound and outbound movement of storage and picking containers
  • the transportation of completed picking orders
