What is a picking system?

The term picking system, defined by VDI Guideline 3590, refers to the assembly of specific quantities from an assortment based on demand or orders.

This may involve raw materials, tools, semi-finished, or finished goods. The appropriate picking method depends on time and space constraints and determines the selection of the ideal system configuration.

Picking systems are generally divided into:

  • Information system
  • Organizational system
  • Material flow system

The required information can be transmitted:

  • Acoustically (Pick-by-Voice)
  • Visually (Pick-by-Light)
  • Via wireless data transmission

The material flow system controls the availability and transport of goods, while the organizational system focuses on process setup and optimization to improve long-term workflow efficiency.
