What is meant by segmentation?

Segmentation is the process of dividing a whole into smaller, distinct parts. In logistics, it is used to increase efficiency by isolating and optimizing:

  • Customer groups
  • Markets
  • Products
  • Supply chains

Goals of segmentation:

  • enter new markets
  • focus on relevant target audiences
  • customize logistics processes based on risk, demand, or product profile

Segmentation in Warehousing

If storage strategy S6 is active, slot segmentation can be applied per location. This allows multiple identical items per slot.

Example:

  • Slot stores 10 rolls of carpet type A
  • Only same item may be added
  • Once cleared, a different item (e.g., type B) may be stored
  • If smaller, the system can allow more units (e.g., 20 rolls)

Note: Only identical articles per slot.

Services for Supply Chain Segmentation

Segmenting the supply chain enables:

  • Inventory optimization
  • Process improvements
  • Time and cost savings
  • Improved flexibility and material flows

Supported by WMS, which analyzes and structures data to assist in segmentation decisions.
