What is meant by storage system?

When goods, spare parts, or raw materials are stored in industry and commerce, a well-conceived storage system is required.
This contributes to optimal storage and prevents the random arrangement of materials.

For the storage system to be effective in the warehouse, it must consider what can or should be stored and in what form. This includes, for example, that stored goods are differentiated by:

  • Consistency
  • Shelf life
  • Size, shape, and weight
  • Frequency of retrieval
  • Required safety and hygiene precautions
  • Transportability
  • Required storage conditions (for example, refrigerated)

For instance, consistency plays a role in the acquisition of necessary storage containers, retrieval frequency determines the transport route, and safety precautions determine what special protective measures must be taken.
The storage system can be set up as fixed or dynamic.

In the first case, certain goods are always placed in the same location; in the second case, the assignment of locations is based on where free space is currently available.
Specifically for dynamic storage, the use of storage management software proves to be advantageous, as it automatically records positions and stock levels.
