How are warehouse holding costs structured?

Warehouse holding costs refer to the calculated expenses caused by storing goods in a company warehouse.

Typical warehouse holding costs include:

  • fixed costs: rent or lease, energy costs, depreciation, and personnel costs in administration and warehouse operations
  • variable costs: consumables such as packaging materials, pallets, tools, scrap goods, transportation expenses, and interest on inventory value
  • overhead costs: maintenance, administration, fleet operations, and warehouse software usage

Accurate calculation of these costs requires solid business metrics. For example:

  • the warehouse cost rate determines how much it costs to store goods
  • the inventory intensity measures the total value of goods currently held in storage

To prevent excessive costs, warehouse holding costs must be minimized. Strategies include:

  • regular warehouse cleanups to remove unsellable or obsolete items
  • ongoing inventory monitoring
  • setting maximum stock levels to avoid overstocking
