What is meant by warehouse management?

Warehouse management refers to the systematic control and coordination of warehouse operations. It is distinct from warehouse planning, which precedes it, though ideally warehouse management is already considered during the planning phase.
It includes all processes involving the movement and storage of materials. The term is often used almost synonymously with supply chain management.

The main focus areas of warehouse management are inbound and outbound logistics:

  • Inbound includes the registration and preparation of goods or materials for storage.
  • Outbound involves the preparation for shipping and the handover to customers or logistics service providers.
For both areas, a packing station is typically required.

Another key element of warehouse management is the recording of inventory levels and storage components such as shelves, containers, boxes, or pallets.
It also addresses the optimal placement and retrieval of goods.

In modern warehouse management, Warehouse Management Software (WMS) is used to provide real-time visibility into stock levels, storage locations, and all inventory movements.
Additional support may be provided by external logistics planning service providers.
