What is a picking procedure?

The term picking procedure is defined by VDI Guideline 3590. The definition is quite precise: it refers to the process of assembling partial quantities from a total quantity based on specific orders.

The type of items involved can vary greatly, ranging from raw materials to finished goods. The choice of the appropriate picking procedure depends on the specific time-related and spatial requirements. Additionally, the provisioning of goods, especially in regard to picking and delivery, plays a key role.

From this, picking systems are derived, which can be categorized into three main areas:

  • Information system
  • Organizational system
  • Material flow system

Order execution can be carried out visually, acoustically, or via wireless data communication. The material flow system manages the provision of goods and influences the movement patterns of employees. The organizational system deals more with structural and procedural organization, as well as its optimization.
